The Barrancabermeja Refinery was chosen as the best in its class in Latin America

Ecopetrol’s refinery in Barrancabermeja was elected as the best in Latin America by the World Refining Association at this year’s Latin American Refining Technology Conference (LARTC) held this week in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The association also recognized Ecopetrol's Vice President of Refining and Industrial Processes, Walter Canova, as the Downstream Executive of the Year.

The award granted to the Barrancabermeja refinery celebrated its achievements in energy efficiency, as well as its leadership in energy transition, its profitability and the implementation of new technologies in its operations.

Other nominees in the category of best refineries include the Mataripe plant in Brazil owned by the Arab private fund Acelen; the Axion Campana refinery located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, owned by Pan American Energy; and Raízen, a Brazilian Energy Company with a refinery in Buenos Aires.

Walter Canova, Vice President of Refining and Industrial Processes at Ecopetrol, stated the Barrancabermeja refinery has evolved in response to the environmental, social and energy security commitments made by Colombia.

He evoked its contribution to the production of clean fuels, its outstanding standing within the first quartile of the Solomon benchmarking of Latin America as well as in the Energy Intensity Index (EII) indicator, according to results attained in the last three studies, and the exceptional results in last two studies of the Carbon Emissions Index (CEI). Likewise, it has reduced CO2 equivalent GHG emissions by 1.9 million tons since 2013.

Carlos Guillermo García, General Manager of the Barrancabermeja refinery, highlighted the skills and commitment of its human talent and its aptitudes to design the energy transition initiatives currently underway.

“The transformation we have seen over the past 100 years - from a 1,500 barrels per day distillery to a 250,000 barrels per day refining complex - is similar in magnitude to what we expect to experience over the next 30 years as we tackle decarbonization and the energy transition,”  confirmed Mr. Garcia

During the Latin American Refining Technology Conference, the refinery’s manager Carlos García presented the seminar "Barrancabermeja, a refinery of the future", which highlighted its 100 years of contributions to generating value for the country and the city of Barrancabermeja.

The award for Downstream Executive of the Year won by Vice President Walter Canova, recognized his extraordinary performance in terms of growth, change management, success in the sector, implementation of strategies for an effective transition, and stellar reputation in the industry and the local and regional markets.
